What is an Early College High School? Come find out at Academy of the Redwoods Information Night March 30th: By Matt Malkus

Eureka, California, 3/3/09 – The Academy of the Redwoods (AR) will hold an information night on Monday March 30th at 6:30 pm in the large Lakeview Room on the College of the Redwoods (CR) Campus. AR invites anyone interested in finding out what our school is all about to come to our information night.  We welcome interested parents, prospective students and community members who have heard about early college high school and want to learn more.  There will be a brief presentation by principal Matt Malkus and current students and parents will also be available to talk about their experience.  This year we celebrate the first graduating class of AR and want to share with the community what our students have accomplished. The majority of the evening will be open for discussion and an open format will include a question and answer period where any and all your questions about AR will be answered.   Academy of the Redwoods is a Fortuna Union High School District early college high school with an accelerated and rigorous college preparatory curriculum. The school is located on the College of the Redwoods campus. It provides qualified students with a high school diploma and, potentially, up to two years of college credit by the time they complete their four-year high school education. AR was one of the first “early college high schools” in the State of California: currently there are more than twenty in operation throughout the state and more being implemented each year. In the 9th and 10th grades, AR students take predominantly high school courses; students can take up to 11 units of college credit per semester in the third and fourth year of the AR program. The high school curriculum is marked by a clear focus on the importance of literacy in all disciplines: thus, AR students enroll in two years of intensive high school courses to better prepare them for college enrollment and the work that is demanded for success in post-secondary education.   AR is currently accepting applications for the 2009/2010 academic years.  To apply, a high grade point average (GPA) is not a requirement, but a high level of motivation to tackle a rigorous and challenging curriculum is mandatory. Academy of the Redwoods adheres to the Early College
High School Core Principles and thus encourages applications from:
• Low-income young people,
• First-generation college goers,
• English language learners,
• Students of under-represented cultural groups,
• Students who are capable but who may have not realized their potential in school,
• Students who feel under-represented,
• Students who feel confined by the traditional high school setting and would like to participate in an alternative high school with an accelerated approach to education.
